Hot Puds are back, and this time - it’s nautical. Following on from the release of their last EP Hot Puds 2, the fellas have cooked up their most ambitious serving of songs yet. Recorded at Bottle Rocket Recording studios with Jonny Coddington of fellow London power-poppers Ex-Vöid, Chum sees the band adding piano and keyboards to their fuzzy, hook-laden rock efforts.

With no prior coordination before the recording sessions, each of the four songs is inadvertently soaked with nautical energy. Opener Beached Whale combines Dick Dale-esque surf guitar tones with full-throated screaming, the lyrics reflecting the dying thoughts of a whale washed ashore. First Mate – conceived as an unsolicited song submission for Dua Lipa – is a tender loser's ballad, Harry Nilsson-via-Pavement. Strings jangle, keys twinkle, hearts break. Isthmus is an angular adventure, a stream-of-consciousness picaresque on the deck of a ship, jumping between time signatures as it travels along the waterways. Closer Killing Turtles bolts straight out the gate with fast-tempo rock, before falling away into a half-time instrumental with duelling guitar lines that invoke the immortal spirit of Thin Lizzy.
